Tonight I went to a screening of the documentary “Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton” – the story of pioneer record label Stones Throw records. An allover passion-driven label with a love for the underdog. There’s lots of great music featured in the movie, alongside the stories from the influential hip hop artists that seemed to be the core of the label to begin with, like mastermind Madlib, MF Doom, Madvillain and producer J Dilla.
Ariel Pink, Mike D, Tyler The Creator, Common and Kanye West (just for the sake of hardcore namedropping) also have something to say in the story of Stone Throw and its influence. But this is not just a hip hop label, and I also got to meet people like The Stepkids (I’m already really into them!) Jonti and James Pants for the first time. I can’t wait to get to know them all better.
Try and track down the movie if possible, and get inspired by the brave entrepreneurship and the deep love of music from the founder Peanut Butter Wolf (great name btw) and the people around him!
